Follow up, Counselling and Psychological
support for Athletes and Artists

Michael Pelling and his team offer different types of intervention:
Assessment of mental resources
During this assessment we make an inventory of the mental resources of our client, also known as the mental power. Mental power is the combination of all psychological elements that an athlete or artist must master to obtain the best possible performance, like there are stress and motivation, just to name a few. We propose a complete and precise evaluation, which will enable the client to have a better understanding of his or her competencies. This analysis forms the basis for every possible future intervention. It’s designed for every person who wants to strengthen his or her mental capacities and by doing so, in the end, improving their performance.
Motivation analysis
This intervention is a specific follow up of the mental resources assessment. The motivational analysis consist of an inventory of personal motivation schemes, in order to answer to specific motivational problems. We work on improving the compatibility of internal and external motivations. This is done by helping our clients develop tools to manage their motivations, in relation to the targets that the athlete or artist wants to achieve.
Stress management
This intervention is a specific follow up of the mental resources assessment, and deals with the treatment of all kinds of forms of stress, like there are
- competitive stress : experienced during competitions
- or precompetitive stress – experienced just prior to important competition dates.
The follow up allows us to distinguish positive from negative stress factors. By channeling positive stress and eliminating negative stress factors, the clients is able to use these forms of energy to his or her advantage.
Managing your emotions
Managing ones emotions is of vital importance when it comes to maintaining a stable and durable achievement level. We propose an emotional analysis, focused on the individual. This analysis permits us to show the strategies that the client has developed to deal with consecutive frustrations or emotional overloads. The intervention aims at neutralizing emotional explosive situations or temper-oriented problem situations.
Managing of substandard performance
During this intervention we help our clients deal with disappointment due to underachievement, in order to return to their normal achievement level after a series of bad performances. The art of constant progression lies in the capacity of ‘bouncing back’. This demands an understanding of why we are underachieving, in order to work back to succeeding again in our efforts. Once the bounce-effect is realised, we focus on the development of techniques to maintain this confidence level, enhancing positive results and the pursuit of ones objectives, unhindered by negative emotions.
Rehabilitation after injury
Sooner or later, every athlete or artist is confronted with the problems caused by injuries. This is inevitable en should be dealt with in effective way, in order to avoid psychological damages, even when the injury itself is already cured. This intervention takes place during the recovery period to facilitate an active, quick and efficient rehabilitation.
Communication
Every athlete or artist has to communicate with many different people; their team-mates or colleagues, their trainers, their clubs or schools, federations, the media or simply with their parents. In order to further develop interpersonal relationships and to learn how to deal with conflicts, we offer a mediation platform, guaranteeing the development of constructive dialogues. We also work on the relation between verbal and non-verbal communication, important aspects in both non-competitive communicative situations as well as in competitive contexts. Almost 70 % of our communication is non-verbal. An accurate understanding of this enables us not only to better recognize the weaknesses of our adversaries as well as hiding our own.
Prevention
As professional in the sport’s field, we must encourage fairness and certain values that may be in danger because of what the competition can lead to. We think of young athletes and artists that must be kept away from drugs through doping or burnout in their activity. That’s why we work with parents, schools and clubs to help people in such difficult situations.
Career (re)orientation
Only recently have we become aware of the importance of an effective return to a successful ‘normal’ life, following the competitive career of an athlete or an artist. We’ll help our clients during this transitional period, by analysing their interests and motivations, in order for them to redefine and pursue their new goals and objectives with confidence.
